Emotional logic is not emotional intelligence. It is a set of systematic tools that teach new insights about emotions and how it is linked to your set of personal values. The kinaesthetic learning that takes place, is effective in dealing with loss that ranges from daily disappointments to trauma. It was developed by Dr Trevor Griffiths, a medical doctor from the UK and is theoretically underpinned by Chaos Theory, Systems Theory and grief emotions of Elizabeth Kűbler-Ross. It looks at the complexity of repetition of behaviour and emotions in human relationships and emotions. Emotional Logic breaks the habitual, repeated pattern and introduces a new energy / pattern by recognizing the grief of loss and forming a safe way of responding with assertive bargaining.

Training objectives:

Upskill professionals to master the three-step construct and process of the system of an EL systemic conversation in dealing with trauma and loss. You will receive a manual with the tools of Emotional Logic and learn how to use it as a counselling tool.

Session 1: Gerard Eagan in his book “The Skilled helper”, outlined a therapeutic process that consists of three steps. I applied this to the Creative Conversation process of Emotional Logic.

  • Exploration: Client does a card pattern to unpack his inner landscape.
  • Insight: The Skilled helper assists with active listening to name and list hidden losses.
  • Action: Client chose one value to bargain back and formulate a SMART plan to achieve it.

Session 2: An individual session with each participant about a personal situation to experience the transformative learning of applying the process. Confucius said: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." The session is two hours to provide an opportunity to step back in the student role to reflect on what they have learned.

Session 3: Bargaining styles: How do I problem solve? Turning points as you adjust to change in post-traumatic growth. Ethics discussion in break-away rooms about a case study on gender based violence.

Session 4: How to use the EL tools website as a resource in online counselling. Watch and discuss a video where the process is followed online.

Session 5: Emotional Whirlpools. Mixed emotions can cause withdrawal from life, irrational actions or confusion. Practical application is discussed in this training video where you are taught how to identify whirlpools in a client.

Session 6: Practical application of theory by doing a roleplay of a creative conversation in a break-away room under supervision of an EL mentor.

Session 7: Peer group supervision of an anonymous case presentation. Each participant does a first conversation with a friend and presents a card pattern, loss reaction worksheet, and a SMART plan to redeem one value that got hurt. Supervision from trainer and peers.

Feedback from a social worker who is the CEO of an NGO:

Discovering Emotional Logic was one of the most exciting things that happened to me in a long time. I see Emotional Logic as very important in the current global context, where problems are catastrophized and people over-medicated. EL has the potential to give people back their personal power to be in control of their own lives, to rediscover their capacity, and to prevent serious psychological illness.
